FAQs

1. Has the effectiveness of ultraviolet (UV) technology been tested?

Yes. For example, Westinghouse Electric, General Electric, and Penn State University each conducted laboratory tests on the effectiveness of UV light on microorganisms. UV light, and more specifically UV-C light, has the ability to destroy the DNA of microorganisms such as viruses, mold spores, fungi and bacteria. The destruction of their DNA prevents them from replicating, rendering them effectively “dead”. UV-C light is used worldwide for wastewater, HVAC, food processing and medical applications and has been utilized in some function or another for over 60 years.

2. What kind of germs are affected?

UV- C light, which is used in our ALL•AIR™ line of products, is extremely effective against virtually any airborne microbes including cold and flu viruses, bacteria and mold.

3. What is UV-C light?

Short-wave ultraviolet radiation in the “C” band (200 to 280 nanometers) has been used for over 60 years. UV-C (UVC) is also referred to as UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation). The “C” part of the UV family has germicidal affects, especially the 253.7 nanometer frequency. UV-C penetrates the outer structure of the cell and alters the DNA molecule preventing replication and causing cell death.

4. Is UV-C harmful?

Prolonged, direct exposure to UV-C light is harmful to all living organisms, including people. However, our ALL•AIR™ systems have been designed with safety in mind, and include a number of safety features to protect users from direct exposure.

5. How much UV exposure is considered safe?

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has established safe exposure levels for each type of UV. These safe exposure limits are set below the levels found to cause eye irritation, as the eye is the body part most sensitive to UV. For germicidal UV-C (253.7nm) the exposure limit is less than 0.2µW/cm² over 8 hours. It is important to keep in mind that you will not be exposed to any type of UV light through UV treated air. Exposure refers to direct exposure to UV light only. Our ALL•AIR™ systems have built in safety measures to prevent this from occurring.

6. What are Volatile Organic Compounds?

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are chemical compounds that are emitted as gases from certain solids and liquids. These gases easily vaporize under normal conditions and enter the atmosphere. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Some examples of items that may produce VOCs in your home include: paints and lacquers, cleaning supplies, deodorizers, building materials, furniture, office equipment (copiers, printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper), glues and adhesives and permanent markers. Typically, VOC concentrations are 2-5 times higher inside the home than outdoors.

7. What kind of effects can Volatile Organic Compounds have on my health?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VOCs have been known to cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination, nausea, as well as damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some organics can cause cancer in animals and some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.  Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis, fatigue, dizziness.

8. Does UV get rid of Volatile Organic Compounds?

No, UV alone will not destroy VOCs. However, by using UV-C light in conjunction with our patented high reflectance, photocatalytic oxidation coating technology, our ALL•AIR™ systems will reduce the amount of VOCs in the air gradually over time.

9. Why shouldn’t I use ozone generating air cleaners?

The EPA and American Lung Association are strongly against the use of ozone generators indoors. It has been determined that ozone is corrosive to lung tissue. Asthmatics should be especially cautious around ozone as it has been determined that respiratory exposure to ozone will increase the frequency of asthma attacks. In addition, ozone is known to be very corrosive to certain materials and can damage your HVAC system.

10. Do your ALL•AIR™ products produce ozone?

No. Ozone is a toxic gas. Some UV-C devices do produce ozone but our ALL•AIR™ units do not. All UV-C germicidal lamps used in our ALL•AIR™ line of disinfection products are certified to be non-ozone producing.

11. What is the difference between an ALL•AIR™ air purification system and an air filter?

An air filter is designed to trap and hold particulate from the air (ex: dust and dirt). Airborne living organisms such as bacteria and viruses pass through most filters like sand passes through a tennis racket. Our ALL•AIR™ air purifiers are designed to kill pathogenic microorganisms through DNA sterilization using UVGI and photocatalytic oxidation, which destroys both biological and chemical contaminants.

12. Why do I need an ALL•AIR™ system if I already have filters?

Air filtration and air purification are two different things. Filters will trap and hold particulate in the air stream, but they do not have an effect on the trapped contaminants (i.e. the filters do not destroy the contaminants that get trapped). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) structure indoor air contamination into 3 categories:

  1. Particulate: made up of airborne dust and dirt that gets trapped on a filter.
  2. Bio-aerosols: living microbes that include viruses, bacteria and mold, which can be addressed with germicidal ultraviolet light disinfection.
  3. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): odours, fumes and off-gases that can be destroyed using photocatalytic oxidation.

Our ALL•AIR™ systems do not replace air filtration. Air filtration still plays an important role in having clean, safe air. Our systems compliment air filtration by purifying the air and destroying contaminants filters would be otherwise ineffective against. Our ALL•AIR™ systems address both bio-aerosols and VOCs, which the exception of our DX and DR models. Our DV Whole Home Air Purification System and our WR Whole Room Portable Air Purification System also include 3-stage filtration for homes or businesses with inadequate or no filtration system in place. Our DV and WR models also expose the filters to a small amount of UV light that renders trapped contaminants harmless, preventing you from being exposed to harmful material when changing the filters.

13. Tell me about your DX model. Why should I irradiate my cooling coil(s)?

Cooling coil irradiation is important to both residential and commercial applications. UV-C irradiation of the cooling coil kills surface contamination on the coil surface and drip pan and prevents contaminated air from being reintroduced to the occupied areas of the building. For indoor air quality, a clean coil provides improved heat transfer, reduced maintenance, odour control and the other health related advantages. Cooling coil irradiation can also reduce operating costs and save energy by making your system run more efficiently.

14. How do the various L2B ALL•AIR™ systems work?

All of our ALL•AIR™ systems use germicidal ultraviolet light, our patented high reflectance, photo-catalytic oxidation coating and in some cases air filtration to address indoor air quality (IAQ) issues. Our ALL•AIR™ systems kill up to 99% of airborne pathogens that include viruses, bacteria, and mold on each air pass through the system. They also work to break down and destroy VOCs. Our ALL•AIR™ air purifiers are not by-pass systems. We treat 100% of the air on each pass. For more information regarding specific products, please consult our residential or commercial product listings on our website.

15. Will an ALL•AIR™ system help with allergies?

Bio-aerosol related allergies such as Asthma have shown abatement and noticeable remission when UV-C products are used in residential and commercial HVAC equipment. Please visit our testimonials page to see what some of our customers have had to say about our products.

16. Do the residential ALL•AIR™ systems operate continuously?

Yes. Our residential ALL•AIR™ systems work 24 hours a day to purify the indoor air. This is not true with some of our commercial air purification systems that turn on and off with the HVAC blower motor.

17. Should the UV-C lamp(s) be cycled with the fan or run continuously?

We recommend that you run them continuously. When the UV-C germicidal lamp(s) and power supply performance and lifespan are considered, they will run better and longer when running continuously.

18. Are your ALL•AIR™ systems expensive to operate?

Not at all. For example, our ALL•AIR™ residential systems use approximately the same amount of energy as a single 100watt light bulb.
